It’s not all in your head – mental health is a complex ecosystem
Sometimes what feels like a personal struggle is really a sign that your environment isn’t supporting you.
When we’re constantly adapting, filtering, or performing just to be accepted, it’s no wonder we feel exhausted. Calm becomes harder to access in a turbulent environment.
Mental health isn’t just about what’s going on inside us, it’s shaped by what’s happening around us.
A Shift in Perspective
In a recent study published in JAMA Psychiatry, a global team of researchers led by Professor Marten Scheffer proposed a powerful idea:
Mental health behaves like a complex ecosystem.
They compared our inner world to ecosystems – like forests or lakes. A lake doesn’t turn toxic overnight. It changes slowly, almost invisibly, until one day… collapse. Mental health works the same way:
- Stress builds, quietly.
- Support thins out.
- Resilience wears down.
- Then, “suddenly” – snap.
That “sudden” moment isn’t weakness or indicative of a mental health condition, it’s not failure. It’s a system reaching a tipping point.
So What Do We Do?
Instead of asking, “Why am I like this?”, we should treat ourselves with self-compassion and ask:
- What am I carrying?
- What’s missing from my support system?
- What around me is making it hard to be myself?
This isn’t about doing more. It’s about tending to the system you live in – your relationships, routines, spaces, and sense of safety. When we treat mental health like a living system, we start to see that:
- Healing doesn’t always look like pushing harder.
- Resilience isn’t just built; it’s sustained by the world around us.
- Sometimes the most important work is changing the conditions that keep us stuck.
When we can step back and look at the whole eco-system from a place of mature contemplation, we can make meaningful choices.
